From Architecture to Ink: An Inspiring Journey with Tattoo Artist Natalie on Bilderdijkstraat

Welcome to our latest interview! Today, we’re chatting with Natalie of Vadelma Tattoo, an amazing tattoo artist based on Bilderdijkstraat. With a background in architectural drawing and a love for photography, Natalie has found her unique path in the tattoo world. Her beautiful, intricate floral designs and personalized approach make her work truly special. In this interview, Natalie shares how her diverse experiences have shaped her artistic style, what keeps her passionate about her work, and some great advice for aspiring tattoo artists.

Thank you for joining us today, Natalie. Could you start by telling us how you got into tattooing and what led you to this career?

Natalie: Before my tattooing career, I attended a drawing school for almost three years, focusing on technical and architectural drawing. This was parallel to my high school years. After that, I completed a first degree in architecture, so in total, I had about seven years of education in that field. This training helped me understand construction, perspective, and creating lights, which greatly influenced my approach to art. My husband, Simon, encouraged me to explore different projects, which led me to photography and eventually to tattooing. When I first started tattooing, it felt like a magical experience, similar to a scene from a Harry Potter movie. I knew then that this was what I wanted to do.

Moving from architecture to photography and then tattooing is quite a journey. How did you develop your unique style, especially with florals?

Natalie: My goal was always to make tattoos look like delicate drawings with lots of detail. I love how floral designs fit the body’s contours and how each flower can look different every time. It allows me to be creative and adapt to the body’s natural shapes.

How do you make each tattoo session a unique experience for your clients?

Natalie: Each tattoo is personalized. I work by appointment and spend time understanding the client’s vision. Sometimes, I adjust the design live on the skin to fit perfectly, making it almost like a live performance. Meeting the person and adjusting the design to them is crucial.

What do you find most rewarding about your job?

Natalie: Seeing the client’s smile after a session is the most rewarding part. Knowing I’ve created something they’ll carry for life is incredibly fulfilling. Every tattoo, whether big or small, is special to me.

What does a typical day look like for you at the Gallery?

Natalie: I prepare everything before the client arrives, ensuring the design is ready and the workspace is set up. We usually have one customer a day to keep the experience special and unhurried. It’s very satisfying when clients see their design and it’s exactly what they wanted.

Any advice for aspiring tattoo artists or those looking to start their own business?

Natalie: Stay open to everything and learn from others. Be curious about different styles and techniques, and focus on personal growth. Meeting new people and understanding their visions is key. Be adaptable and empathetic.

That’s wonderful advice. Thank you for sharing your journey and insights with us today, Natalie.

Natalie: Thank you! It was great to share my story.
