Meet Simon of Vadelma Tattoo, a tattoo artist with a unique path to his craft. Starting from a technical background and a family business, he found his true calling in the art of tattooing. In this interview, Simon shares how his early love for tattoos, combined with his precision skills, led to opening his own studio.
What inspired you to start tattooing? What led you to it?
Simon:My journey into tattooing is a bit unique. I’ve loved tattoos from an early age and got my first one when I was 17, even though I was underage. Growing up in Poland, tattoos were quite normal in my family. I was always fascinated by the vibe of tattoo studios and spent time in one run by a friend, asking questions out of curiosity. Despite this interest, I pursued technical studies and was involved in our family business, thinking I would take over them someday.
How did you transition from a technical background to tattooing?
Simon: Along the way, I continued getting tattoos and stayed connected with the tattoo community. When my partner Natalie and I moved to Helsinki, Finland, we decided to open our own studio. She is more artistic, so she taught me the craft while I handled the business side, like planning and permissions. My technical drawing skills from my studies helped a lot since traditional tattooing requires precision.
Can you tell us about your first experience tattooing a customer?Simon:It’s quite unique. I had never gone through the typical apprenticeship; I made my first tattoo in our own studio in Helsinki. Surprisingly, I was very calm and professional, without the usual stress. My first customer in Finland turned out to be the last one before we moved, making it a very sentimental experience.
What type of tattoos do you specialize in?
Simon: I specialize in text tattoos. I love that they are often very personal and meaningful, like names, quotes, or motivational sayings. I noticed that text tattoos weren’t getting the attention they deserved, so I focused on making them special. My first tattoo was text, and now people come to me specifically for that, knowing I specialize in it.
What are the benefits of running your own studio?
Simon:Running our own studio allows us to create a safe, clean, and welcoming environment. We attract clients who appreciate our dedication to quality and meaningful art. Our studio’s design is neutral, making everyone feel comfortable. It’s also fulfilling to build a community where people feel connected, especially important given the loneliness many experienced during the pandemic.
Interviewer: How do you stay inspired?
Simon: Life itself is inspiring. Just the fact that we are alive and here is motivation enough. Every day is an opportunity, and I find inspiration in the uniqueness of our existence. Also, the positive feedback from clients and the satisfaction of creating meaningful art keep me motivated.
What has been a valuable lesson you’ve learned while running your own business?
Simon:A key lesson is to stick to your plan and be patient. Some steps you take now may only show results in a year or more. It’s important to have a long-term perspective and not get discouraged if things take time to develop.
Any advice for aspiring tattoo artists?
Simon:Be kind and grateful. Share love and positivity, as it makes a big difference. Also, limit choices for your clients to avoid overwhelming them. Quality over quantity always. And remember, the small, everyday interactions matter a lot.
